Routine Core Analysis
Core Handling
GEOTECH
has over 20 years experience in handling cores of various sizes and
lengths. Core samples are usually shipped directly from the drilling
rig to our laboratory facility, normally in 1m lengths but occasionally
in 9m long aluminum barrels. GEOTECH's core laboratory
is equipped with heavy duty lifting gear to safely manage cores of
any length. GEOTECH's core shed has the capacity
to view and store large amounts of cores.
Surface Core Gamma
The core gamma surface logger is designed to measure and record natural
gamma radiation in core sections. The core gamma log is most commonly
used for correlation purposes and to distinguish different lithological
units.
Core Slabbing (Fully Automated
Slab Saw)
Cores are slabbed to provide a flat surface for core description /
photography / profile
permeametry.
GEOTECH operates state of the art continuous "hands
free" core slabbing equipment which is not only safer and quicker
than normal slab saws, but also provides a more evenly slabbed surface
devoid of any "circular blade" marks. This improved slabbed
surface enhances the appearances of the core in the core photographs
and facilitates profile permeametry measurements. GEOTECH
is capable of slabbing core sections encased in aluminum by using
a specially developed blade, which can simultaneously cut through
rocks and aluminum in a single pass.
Core Plugging (Consolidated and
Unconsolidated Core)
A cylindrical plug is taken from a conventional core for analysis.
Core plugs are typically 1" to 1½" (2.5 to 3.8 cm) in diameter
and 1" to 2" (5 cm) in length. Core plugs are ordinarily
cut perpendicular to the axis of the core (horizontal plug) or parallel
to the axis (vertical plug). Geotech also cuts plugs in other than
standard diameters and trimmed to any length.
